Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the following anatomic structures on the lateral abdominal projection: stomach, liver, spleen, small intestines, descending colon, and bladder.
  2. Understand the appropriate position of the urinary bladder. Understand the relationship between the descending colon’s position and the urinary bladder.
  3. Understand “normal” ventral body wall thickness and how to determine if it is “abnormal.”
  4. Consider the clinical significance of not being able to identify the bladder on survey abdominal films.
